Around the world, the debt crisis is hitting people hard. Inequality has spiralled further out of control during Covid-19. Governments are spending too much money on debt repayments, and imposing austerity measures on the health, education, water, social protection and basic income grants that we need to fight inequality during this pandemic and beyond. The debt stocks of developing countries grew by $500 billion last year. Many Global South governments are spending more on debt servicing payments than they are on health and education.
This week, as the G20, World Bank and IMF hold their annual meetings, we join over 600 organisations in the Global Days of Action for Justice and Debt Cancellation. These international institutions have so far failed to help with their policy responses during the pandemic, and have in many ways made the situation worse. It’s time to let our governments and these institutions know that we demand unconditional debt cancellation, and an end to austerity. We need a People’s Recovery from Covid-19, not the same failed neoliberal policy responses.
Today, Friday 15th October, is also the anniversary of former Burkino Faso President Thomas Sankara's death. His words that “Debt is a cleverly managed reconquest of Africa” remain truer than ever, and inspire our struggles today.
Let’s send our message loud and clear tomorrow with a Twitterstorm. Join in at 4:00PM EAT/3:00 PM CAT using this Social media toolkit.
